Sac PD's New Technology: License Plate Reader

It's called a 'License Plate Reader' and Sacramento is one of the only departments around to have cars equipped with technology
Deemed as the "Most Innovative Use of Technology" award is for the Mobile Automated License Plate Reader.

This technology enables a computer to read license plates in real-time and compare it against a data base of stolen and wanted vehicles. If there is a match, the officer is notified, allowing them to take the appropriate action.

Patrol cars outfitted with the Mobile Automated License Plate Reader technology are equipped with three external camera systems. During routine patrols, the cameras are constantly scanning license plate images. These images are continuously being transmitted to a computer data base for processing.

During a typical shift on the street, a patrol car will come across and read approximately 3,000 license plates.

The Sacramento Police Department has been involved with the testing and development of this technology over the last three years. This system is a tremendous benefit to our officers and a significant "force multiplier" for the department.
